Even if you don’t have access to soil and have zero gardening experience, IKEA’s new hydroponic system will let you plant and cultivate vegetables all throughout the year!

What’s the secret to making this system work?

IKEA’s garden idea is unique because it allows for the cultivation of plants even with soil. It makes use of a hydroponic system that only requires water and light to nourish the plants. These days, most of the vegetables we consume are grown in a similar manner. For example, absorbent foam plugs provided for by the system are used in the seed sprouting process. Later on, the foam plug can then be relocated into its own pot. Pumice stones can be used to fill up the pot afterwards since they are capable of retaining larger amounts of water. After this process, a growing tray is used to house the filled pots. The growing trays have solar lamps that are capable of providing light for up to a year..  The seedlings can also be left in an area that receives adequate amount of sunlight as well. Moreover, to ensure that the plants are properly watered at all times, the growing trays have been equipped with water sensors. Swedish agricultural scientists have come up with this ingenious system. It is a perfect way for people who don’t have space for a garden to still be able to have plants at home.

How soon can you get your hands on it?

Everybody knows that IKEA mainly sells furniture and the thought of it offering miniature indoor gardens would kind of feel out of place. Nonetheless, IKEA is an innovative company and this innovation is just one of their many projects. This hydroponic gardening system is planned to be released on April, but it doesn’t have a set price as of now. But now you know that this spring, you’ll be looking forward to seeing IKEA shelves stocked up with the KRYDDA/VÄXER!

This may not be the very first hydroponic system, but it surely will be cheaper than all the others.
